Rita Kanazeh
Treasurer & RSO Representative in Friends of MSF
After being on the committee for Treasury and Registered Student Organization Representative for the Doctors Without Borders student chapter (Friends of MSF) for about a semester, I then took on the two roles as Treasurer and RSO Representative for one year on the E-board. Being a vital part of MSF's student chapter meant a lot to me and gave me a greater understanding of the global perspective on medical missions and conflicts they work in. My responsibility included managing and budgeting the club's fundraised money and making sure the club is in good standing with FIU's policies. I additionally helped in other roles within the club such as brainstorming events and taking initiative in bringing guest speakers such as Natalie Rivas from the CLEO Institute, Dr. Washington, and Dr. Ward.
"Future of Latin America and the Caribbean" FIU Fly-In Seminar
In March of 2022, I participated in a FIU in DC three day fly-in seminar alongside a group of FIU students to learn about the Future of Latin America and the Caribbean in the following five areas: Health, a Green Future, Accelerating the Transition to Clean Energy, Digital Transformation, and Democratic Governance. During this seminar, I was able to learn so much from the different think tanks, agencies, and firms such as Kyle House Group, Freedom House, Atlantic Council, USAID, and Interamerican Development Bank on the issues they work on and ask questions pertaining to the region. At the end of the seminar, each group (I was in the health group) compiled all the learnings we received from the three days and had the opportunity to present their solutions to directors of the Organization of American States (OAS)
GL's Transformational Contest Winner
I wrote a paper on the trash crisis in Lebanon that I witnessed on a recent trip and submitted it the the 2022 GL Transformational Contest and won in March of 2022. Winning this contest, I was able to win a trip to Washington D.C with the FIU in DC office and meet with different institutions while there. This emotional paper I composed talked about several injustices I witnessed on my trip, focusing on trash. I also talked about the political situation and its effect on the deterioration of the country. Being the global learner that I am and an emotional person, I provided perspective on how seeing trash lying on the streets had negative implications on the health and environment of the country. This trip repurposed my vision in life and allowed me to understand realities on a complex level. I felt extremely grateful for the conditions we have in the United States because the trash crisis and economic crisis in Lebanon were the epitome of underdevelopment and corruption. The whole trip made me realize how much of a global learner I truly am.
GL Points
Below are some experiences I had in Global Learning, such as club leadership, a three-day seminar in FIU in D.C., Transformational Contest winner, and participation in GL events such as TTRs.
Tuesday Times Roundtables (TTRs)
Here are some TTRs that I have participated in that made a significant impact on my Medallion experience.
Should a Year of National Service be Required?
Date: 11/16/21
This TTR allowed me to understand the purpose and importance of Peace Corps and how traveling to another country can provide so much experience and open-mindedness to oneself and bring forth your ideas to other cultures and how to respectfully introduce your perspective and accept theirs.
Water Rights and Water Security: Meeting the Demand in the face of a Shrinking Supply
Date: 1/18/22
This TTR was extremely important as it talked about a current issue being faced in the Nile River with water scarcity and lack of fair division among neighboring states in Egypt, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan,Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. It is important to know about this issue and how it will affect a growing world and regional population and what that will mean for available drinking water and water for resources.

(mis)Representations: How Media Recontextualizes Events, People, and History
Date: 10/18/22
This session fit in my overall Global learning journey because it is extremely important to be aware of the false, true, and staged news especially since global learning enhances open-mindedness and minimizes ignorance. Those who stick to one news source and do not take multiple media outlets in consideration to obtain different perspectives are easily brainwashed or influence to a biased direction. Global Learning is the epitome of getting different perspectives and that is a key message in this TTR.
